Explosions Follow West Virginia Train Derailment, Prompts Evacuation of Nearby Residents

A train derailment that occurred Monday afternoon has sent at least one crude oil tanker into a nearby river and has prompted the evacuation of residents near the community of Armstrong Creek, West Virginia, according to local news reports.
As of 4:30 p.m., the entire town of Boomer, West Virginia, has been evacuated following six explosions, according to reports from local news station, WOWK.
It was snowing at the time of derailment, and the temperature was near 10 F, AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Dale Mohler said, adding that first responders may have difficulty due to the winter weather.
As of Monday afternoon, no fatalities were reported according to a West Virginia State Police press release.

The incident, which occurred near state route 61 in Fayette County, has also caused at least one structure fire, according to WCHS-TV. West Virginia route 61 is closed due to the incident.
West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin issued a State of Emergency for Kanawha and Fayette counties Monday evening.
The CSX train, which had more than 100 cars carrying crude oil, was traveling from North Dakota to Yorktown, Virginia.
"Declaring a State of Emergency ensures that residents of both Kanawha and Fayette counties have the access they need to resources necessary to handle all stages of the emergency," Gov. Tomblin said. "State officials are on site and will continue to work with local and federal officials, as well as CSX representatives, throughout the incident."
Another explosion was reported by WOKW around midnight on Monday night, sending flames shooting up into the air in the dark of night.
"State Police Sgt. Bennett with the Beckley detachment confirmed one of his officers arrived on scene around 1:30 Monday afternoon to at least one CSX crude oil car off the track," West Virginia Public Radio reported.
West Virginia Public Safety spokesman Lawrence Messina told the Associated Press that the tanker is leaking crude oil into the Kanawha River.
Messina also said that at least one and possibly more tanker cars went into the river.
The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Public Health announced in a press release that water intakes in Montgomery and Cedar Grove have been closed following a train derailment that occurred in Fayette County due to crude oil leaking into the river.

Emergency Crews, Environmental Officials Responding To Fayette Train Derailment
WCHS - CHARLESTON, W.Va. --Emergency crews and state environmental officials are responding to a train derailment in West Virginia that sent at least one tanker car containing crude oil into the Kanawha River.
Dispatchers said the derailment occurred Monday afternoon of CSX train in Fayette County, which is north of Beckley.
Public Safety spokesman Lawrence Messina said responders at the scene said the tanker is leaking crude oil into the river.
Messina said at least one and possibly more tanker cars went into the river. He also said the derailment sparked a house fire.
An emergency dispatcher said the area within a quarter-mile radius of Adena Village is being evacuated. A Fayette County 911 dispacthers said Adena Village and Lower Boomer are being evacuated.
W.V. 61 is closed due to the incident. Dispatchers said it is unknown if there are any fatalities.
Metro 911 said it received the request for assistance from Fayette 911 about 1:30 p.m. Monday.
Residents being evacuated can seek shelter at the Montgomery Fire Department, the Community Center in Fallsview and the Community Center in Armstrong Creek.
The West Virginia Emergency Operations Center is being acitvated at the state Capitol in response to the train derailment, Robert Jelacic, a night supervisor at the Emergency Operations Center said. He said representatives from the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Health and Human Resources and the West Virginia State Police are being called in to provide assistance at the center.

Metro 911 said it had received a request from Fayette County 911 to send a tanker from the Glasgow Fire Department to the Montgomery Fire Department to assist with the incident.
