Following the 80-degree F warmth during the end of September, temperatures will dip some 50 degrees lower this weekend as the first snowflakes since last winter fly.
With gusty winds factored in, AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures will plummet into the 20s during the nighttime hours with actual lows in the 30s in some areas.
The AccuWeather RealFeel Temperature stands apart from other indices, such as the National Weather Service's Wind Chill Index, which generally rely on two factors - such as temperature and either wind speed or humidity. RealFeel Temperatures incorporate many factors in a complex equation to provide a precise measure of how the temperature feels outdoors in a specific location. Contributing factors include temperature, wind speed and humidity, as well as additional factors including precipitation, cloud cover and sun intensity. Only the patented technology of the RealFeel Temperature lets you know what it feels like to people.
The air has also turned cold enough for the first snowflakes of the season to fly across the Chicago area on Saturday morning. The snow will not accumulate, but will instead serve as a reminder that winter is just around the corner.
With the expected cold, football fans will be wise to dress in warm clothing. In addition to the November-like air and showers, gusty winds up to 45 mph could make for tricky conditions for passing and kicking.
The cold air passing over Lake Michigan can produce rough conditions on the waters, including the risk of waterspouts.
