Downpours to Drench New England Saturday

Umbrellas and raincoats will be put to good use across New England on Saturday as a cold front delivers rain to the region.
Rainy, cloudy and breezy conditions will be the theme for the first half of the weekend as the cold front progresses eastward, clearing much of the region by late Saturday night.
This rain will soak college football games, cause travel delays, and bring unfavorable conditions for those hoping view some fall foliage.

Over an inch of rain may be possible in some areas of New England through Saturday night, enough to cause flooding on streets and poor drainage areas.

A drier day is on tap for New England in the wake of the cold front with only a few showers downwind of the Great Lakes on Sunday.
This dry weather will arrive just in time for several professional football games set to be held across the region, including home games by the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.
Fall-like temperatures are forecast to move in with the dry weather, only a temporary change before warmth returns during the upcoming week.

While Saturday's rain will slow travel and disrupt outdoor activities, it is much needed following a dry September.
Many locations in New England failed to receive even half of the rainfall that they typically receive in all of September.
As a result, the U.S. Drought Monitor has classified portions of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York in a moderate drought.
This should not be overly concerning for residents of the region; however, as Saturday's rain will help to make up for September's deficit.
Additionally, another storm system will likely deliver more rain to the region around the middle of the upcoming week, continuing to make up for September's unusually dry conditions.
