A southern storm will track close enough to the Northeast coast prior to Valentine's Day to directly impact travel in New York City.
Expect flight delays and cancellations to increase ahead of the winter storm Tuesday and Wednesday.
Dry and cold weather is in store for the region through the day Wednesday, including participants, fans and pooches heading to the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden through Tuesday.
Snow will overspread the region from south to north later Wednesday night and may become heavy at times Thursday.
Where the storm remains all snow, there is the potential for a heavy accumulation, perhaps in the neighborhood of a foot. Blowing and drifting snow would add to cleanup issues and travel difficulties.
In areas near the coast where rain or ice mixes in at the height of the storm, there are still likely to be slippery roads and disruptions to daily activities for a time Thursday.
Moderate winds near the coast at the height of the storm and immediately in its wake could lead to sporadic power outages and downed tree limbs.
The storm will depart later Thursday night.
Much of the region is expected to be free of precipitation on Valentine's Day, but travel disruptions may linger in the wake of the storm.
