Weekend Weather Woes for Seattle, Pacific Northwest

September 20,2013; 9:06PM,EDT

Wet weather will make a return to Seattle and the rest of the Pacific Northwest this weekend as a series of disturbances arrive.
Some rain came Friday afternoon for coastal portions of the Northwest; however, most of the rain in the city will be spread out over the weekend.
The first disturbance will begin to slide in late Friday and into Saturday, pushing showers from the coast inland to Seattle. The next disturbance will roll in Sunday, bringing heavier showers and possibly a rumble of thunder.

The month of September has already been a soaker in the weather books and rain this weekend will only add to it. Seattle normally has around 1.50 inches in the month of September. As of Sept. 19, the gauge reads 2.17 inches and will continue to increase.
The jet stream, a river like feature of fast winds in the upper atmosphere, is beginning to strengthen and dip farther south as the season changes. This is pulling more disturbances into the Pacific Northwest and will be the continuing trend.
Although rainfall has been above average, flooding appears to be a low threat for this weekend, but rain will dampen roadways which will make them slippery and hazardous for motorists.

Cooler air will accompany these disturbances as well and could help provide some snow across the higher peaks in the area. However, much of the snow will fall at high enough altitudes that it will not pose any risks to travel. Temperatures in the city will remain in the middle to lower 60s over the weekend.
Folks heading to watch the Seattle Seahawks Sunday should expect rain during the game. A rumble of thunder is also possible and could lead to a delay, similar to last week.
Wet weather will likely last into the early part of next week as well due to an unsettled weather pattern that remains over the region.
