Hurricane Fran caused widespread damage from the Carolinas to
Pennsylvania during early September of 1996. The hurricane reached peak
intensity on Sept. 5 with 120-mph sustained winds before making landfall
near Cape Fear, N.C., early on Sept. 6. Dozens of people were killed
due to the hurricane.
