Unsettled weather continued in areas of the Eastern Seaboard and parts
of the Southeast on Tuesday, while cooler and drier weather spread
further across the Midwest.
In the East, the northern portion of a long cold front extending from
the Northeast through the Deep South continued eastward toward the East
Coast through the afternoon. Sufficient moisture and energy ahead of
this disturbance maintained areas of scattered showers and chances of
thunderstorm. Meanwhile, as the northern portion of this cold front
moves toward the Atlantic Ocean, the southern portion of the boundary
reached across the Southeast. Scattered showers and thunderstorms
developed ahead/to the south of this disturbance with areas of moderate
rainfall.
Behind this activity, high pressure settled over the Midwest with drier
and cooler weather conditions. Afternoon temperatures for the region
ranged from the 60s in parts of the lower and upper Great Lakes through
70s and 80s elsewhere in the Midwest.
Out West, a strong low off the Pacific Northwest coast ushered modest to
strong, moist southwesterly flow into the interior Northwest,
triggering scattered showers and potentially strong thunderstorms.
Additional showers and thunderstorms persisted in areas from the Desert
Southwest into the Central Great Basin.
