Recapping Monday's Snow in the Plains, Ohio Valley

The 2012 calendar year came to a snowy end as a storm system drifting across the Southern states brought light to moderate snowfall from Kansas and Missouri to parts of the Ohio Valley Monday.
A general swath of a coating to an inch of snow fell in along and near the I-70 corridor. Some areas in this corridor barely picked up a dusting of snow due to some pockets of dry air which were found throughout the region.

The heaviest snow fell across western and northern Kansas in the northwest quadrant of the storm system.
Some areas in western and central Missouri into southern Illinois picked up a general 2-4 inches of snow as well. Locally higher amounts greater than 5 inches fell along Highway 63 between Macon and Moberly, Mo.
The storm system left many roads from Kansas into Missouri snow-covered and icy, leading to some slow holiday travel. The snow also reduced visibilities on the roadways.
In Wichita, Kan., a port-a-potty tanker tipped over Monday morning when the driver took the curve of an onramp too fast in the southern part of town. Thankfully, none of the contents were hazardous, only water and sanitizer were in the port-a-potties.
A few record daily maximum snowfall records were set Monday. A record snowfall of 6.5 inches was set in Concordia, Kan. This broke the old record of 3.8 inches set in 2006. Dodge City, Kan., also set a record snowfall of 5.1 inches, breaking the old record of 3.2 inches set in 1924. Finally, a record 1.6 inches of snow was set in Springfield, Ill., just barely breaking the old record of 1.5 set in 1978.
