Extreme weather will impact the north central portion of the country on Sunday, while cool air lingers over the Northwest.
A low pressure system will transition slowly eastward across the upper Intermountain West and the northern Plains. This system will bring cool air to the Pacific Northwest, northern California and the upper Intermountain West. Light to moderate showers and isolated thunderstorms will be possible across the region. The highest elevations of the Cascades and the northern Rockies will experience mixed precipitation. A cold frontal boundary will collide with hot and humid air over the Plains and the Midwest. This interaction will set the stage for strong to severe thunderstorms, affecting areas from the northern high Plains to the upper Mississippi Valley. Severe thunderstorms will be possible in eastern Montana, northeast Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, northern Nebraska and Minnesota. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. In addition, heavy rain will bring threats of flash flooding to northeast Montana, northern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.
Meanwhile, a low pressure system will weaken as it moves east northeastward across New England. This system will keep rain and thunderstorms in the forecast for the Northeast. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system will interact with warm and humid air from the Gulf of Mexico. This collision of air masses will bring stormy weather to the lower Mississippi Valley, the Tennessee Valley, the Gulf Coast and the Southeast. Prolonged heavy rain could lead to flash flooding in southern Missouri, extreme southern Illinois, western Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, northern Mississippi, northern Alabama and northwest Georgia.
