Darby will continue to weaken as it moves westward in the Pacific Ocean the next few days.
Late this week and into next weekend, a much weaker Darby could bring enhanced moisture and high surf to Hawaii.
Here's the latest on Darby:
- Hurricane Darby was located over 1,500 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii, as of Monday afternoon.
- Darby is encountering cooler water and dry air aloft, which will continue a weakening trend over the coming days.
- However, there is some chance Darby, or what's left of it, could make it to Hawaii late this week or next weekend.
- Given the negative factors it will have to work against (cooler water, drier air, increased wind shear), Darby would be much weaker as it passes near, north, or south of the Big Island.
- That said, the system could enhance moisture and increase surf in Hawaii by this weekend. This may lead to increased rainfall.
- Early this week, Hawaii is seeing weaker trade winds, increased moisture and high surf partially due to the remnant of what was Hurricane Celia. The remnant low from Celia itself is passing well north of the islands.
- Darby reached its peak intensity as a Category 3 on Saturday afternoon. According to Dr. Phil Klotzbach, Darby is the fifth consecutive east Pacific use of the name "Darby" that has reached major hurricane status.
