A broad area of low pressure will develop over the western half of the country on Sunday, while a cold front will extend across the East Coast and the Deep South.
A cold frontal boundary will stretch across the northern Mid-Atlantic, the Tennessee Valley, the Deep South and the western Gulf Coast. As moisture from the Gulf of Mexico collides with this frontal boundary, pockets of rain and freezing rain will develop over southeast New Mexico, Texas, southern Arkansas, northern Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Rain and thunderstorms are expected to fire up over the eastern Gulf Coast and the Southeast. In addition, a mixture of rain and snow is forecast to develop over the Mid-Atlantic, the Tennessee Valley, the Ohio Valley the Northeast.
Meanwhile, an arctic high pressure system will sink southward over the Plains and the Midwest. This system will usher bitter cold arctic air over the northern Plains, the upper Midwest and the Great Lakes. Wind chill warnings are already in place for North Dakota, northeast South Dakota and Minnesota. Upslope flow associated with this system will generate moderate to heavy snow showers over the central Rockies.
Out west, an area of low pressure will take shape as it moves slowly southward over the Southwest. This system will bring chances of rain to California and Arizona, as well as high elevation snow showers to the Sierra Nevada and the Wasatch. The Pacific Northwest will stay mostly clear of precipitation on Sunday.
