Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, February 20,2015
Bitter
cold arctic air will impact the eastern half of the country on Friday,
while a low pressure system will develop over the southern Plains.
An arctic high pressure system will inch eastward over the Ohio Valley, the Tennessee Valley and the Mid-Atlantic. This high pressure will bring temperatures 20 to 40 degrees below normal over a handful of states. Wind chill warnings are in place for portions of the upper Midwest, the Ohio Valley, the Appalachians and the Northeast. In addition, a low pressure system sliding northeastward over southeast Canada will usher snow showers across northern New England.
Meanwhile, an area of low pressure is expected to deepen as it shifts eastward over the southern Plains. This system will draw moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, fueling light to moderate precipitation over Plains and the Deep South. As this moist air mass overruns the aforementioned arctic air, widespread snow and freezing rain will develop across the central Plains, the middle Mississippi Valley, the Midwest, the Tennessee Valley and the Deep South. Freezing rain advisories are already in place for portions of Arkansas. Light to moderate rain will also develop over the western Gulf Coast and the lower Mississippi Valley on Friday.
A wave of low pressure will move across the Intermountain West and the northern Plains, creating an area of snow showers from the Rockies to the upper Midwest. Locally heavy snow will be possible along favorable mountain slopes across the Intermountain West.
Out west, an onshore flow from the Pacific will fuel a mixture of rain and snow across the Pacific Northwest. High pressure will keep conditions dry across the Southwest.
