Pileup Crash Injures Dozens as Ambush of Snow Overtakes Maine Highway

As a band of snow moved over the area, greatly reducing visibility, dozens of cars piled up in a major accident along Interstate-95 near Bangor, Maine, on Wednesday morning.
"A big thump of snow that came in this morning as a storm pushing up from the Carolinas strengthened off the coast of Maine," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

The accident occurred around rush hour.
"Snow was probably falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour and visibility was less than half of a mile," he said.
More than 20 vehicles were reported in the crash, according to USA Today. Maine State Police reported 14 injuries. Police also stated lanes along I-95 Northbound in Carmel, Maine, would remain closed for several hours as officials worked to clear the scene.

Police reported that children riding in a school bus involved in the accident were shaken up, but uninjured.
With temperatures near the 15 F mark, snow was able to pile up quickly and hinder vehicle travel.
