AccuWeather Extreme Meteorologist Reed Timmer captured 360-degree video footage from inside a wedge tornado southwest of Elk City, Oklahoma, on Tuesday, May 16, 2017."This is truly revolutionary and has so many implications for science," AccuWeather Director of Content Strategy Samantha Minish said.
The probe contained meteorological instruments and a 360-degree camera, which recorded the massive twister overhead. The 360-degree footage shows extreme winds tossing around debris inside of the tornado.

"Probes like this can enable meteorologists to use data from the instruments and the camera to research how tornadoes form, improving tornado forecasting," AccuWeather Social Media Manager and Meteorologist Jesse Ferrell said.
Reed has been building the probe for over a year, and Tuesday was the first day he attempted to deploy it.
High winds on the backside of the Elk City tornado, which were likely howling at over 111 mph, knocked the probe to the ground. However, the instruments have survived and will likely be deployed in a tornado again soon.
The Elk City tornado killed one person and destroyed at least 40 homes, according to the Associated Press.
The National Weather Service (NWS) survey teams found damage on par with that of an EF2 tornado or stronger.

Why
are there so many haters here? Because someone gets to live and work
their dream job/life and you don't? Get over yourselves. ---Great video

Reed
- this is awesome news, considering you spend a lot on these top class
probes every year, and risk your life to capture some of the best
footage of tornadoes... Keep up the great work!
Rayzor Ray ·
Some people go to races to see the wrecks and not the race,...shame.
Tim Entrekin
Could not believe all of the people still driving out in that. Wow.
Nicole Griffis ·
I hope those were all storm chasers, and not folks who just got caught out in it.
Shelley Powers ·
That caught my attention, too. Seemed to me that people didn't this storm as seriously as they should.
Debby Klinglesmith ·
Well, that was anti-climactic.
Tim Lenhart ·
it is what it is ... but i question the validity of saying inside a wedge tornado ... really ???
Debby Klinglesmith ·
Tim Lenhart Yes, I expected more. But, who am I to say.
Nick Molitor ·
I see the video but Youtube is preventing me from trying to interact with this in 360.
AccuWeather
360 videos will only work correctly on a desktop computer or the YouTube app, not on a mobile device (even on YouTube.com).
Greg LaMarche ·
Reed the man ! Congrats to your team. Be safe. Don't these people know there was instrumentation on that. What some babies.
Jon Cresto
Pretty cool worked like Shelley Powers said great video
Chris Hughes
I think he just kicked it over and started throwing water on it.....
Robert Mcginnis ·
i dont see any of that lol
Jim Green ·
Yeah, I get the same results, which is nothing.
Scott Tron Kuppers ·
lol Wayne... can we get you some cheese for that whine also? :P
Wayne Herrod ·
I want my three minutes back, what a waste of time

Folks,
the video should show a circle in the upper-left, with angle bracket
like arrows. While you play, if you click on that circle (not the
video), you can spin the viewpoint.
You can also use the arrow keys on your keyboard. You first have to place the mouse cursor in the circle. Then you can use the arrows: Left to spin left, right to spin right, but also top and bottom. The top is particularly compelling because you can see the action directly overhead. But you can spin it around, see the tornado coming directly at the camera, see the debris after the camera is knocked over.
If you don't see the circle, and the keyboard doesn't work, I would suggest using a different browser. You may also want to use a PC, because some smart phones don't support the functionality. I'm using Chrome in Windows 10.
It really is an extraordinary video. You need to take time to make sure you have the proper environment in order to appreciate it.

Would be nice if the video included these instructions at the beginning.
AccuWeather
Also Shelley 360 videos will only work correctly on a desktop computer or the YouTube app, not on a mobile device (even on YouTube.com). Without that full 360 experience you describe, it's not very exciting.
AccuWeather
Nicole Griffis we will put the instructions up top, thanks for the note.
Phyllis Black Wasner ·
I got the video/camera angle to turn by using the arrow keys on my keyboard. Pretty neat!
Shelley Powers ·
Excellent. People, you need to click the arrows to move the video viewpoint around to see all perspectives.
Howard Sprengeler ·
Arrows? Yeah, I don't have any to click. If I click on the video, it stops
Shelley Powers ·
Howard Sprengeler Sounds like a browser issue. You don't see a circle in the upper left corner? With angle bracket like arrows?
Shelley Powers ·
Howard Sprengeler Also, try the keyboard arrows.

Yeah, that could have been shrank down to about 30 seconds. Pull this b4 your lose your reputation! ;-)

All
i saw were water droplets dancing on a glass surface. And honestly, the
video was about as interesting as watching paint dry.
Shelley Powers ·
Did you try clicking the arrows and moving the camera viewpoint? This is a 360 degree camera.
I was able to see a lot. It was fascinating.

You can also use the keyboard arrows. But your browser has to support this functionality.
