Temperatures to rebound this week in northeastern US after chilly weekend

The brief dose of April-like chill will gradually be replaced with rebounding temperatures this week in the northeastern United States.
By late this week, nearly perfect conditions for outdoor plans will unfold.
After ending the weekend with temperatures 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit below normal with snow in some locations, mild air is on the horizon.
The chill will ease early in the week as the system responsible for the influx of arctic air departs into eastern Canada. Even warmer weather will follow for late in the week.

"As an area of high pressure builds in from the West by the end of the week, the clouds and rain will be replaced by sunshine," AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Thompson said.
Another storm system will move through Tuesday and Wednesday, slowing the warming trend.
Rain will spread from the mid-Atlantic to southern New England on Tuesday into Tuesday night with below-normal temperatures to follow for most of the Northeast on Wednesday.
Some spots in the central Appalachians may have to content with frost on Wednesday night.
Once the high pressure returns later in the week, residents will finally have an opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities that the recent chill and Tuesday's rain put a damper on.
Aside from a spotty shower in northern New England and near the border of the Virginias, dry weather will dominate late this week underneath a mostly to partly sunny sky.
"Since cool spells are so dependent on cloud cover and precipitation this time of year, just the return of sunshine will bring a sizable jump in temperature from Wednesday to Thursday," Thompson said.

"The high will move offshore by Friday and Saturday, and the warm southwesterly flow on the back side of the high will give temperatures another boost," Thompson said.
Widespread highs in the 70s are expected across the Northeast on Friday, which will be a dramatic change from the highs that were held to the 40s near the eastern Great Lakes and around the 60-degree mark along the I-95 corridor on Sunday.

When compared to Sunday, RealFeel® temperatures will likely be 25-40 degrees higher on Friday due to more sunshine and a lack of gusty winds.
The weather in most communities on Friday night will be ideal for residents to start the weekend at one of the baseball games in New York City and Boston.
Whether the warmth persists through the weekend in the Northeast will depend on how far north a storm set to bring yet another round of downpours to the south-central U.S. tracks.
"Beyond this week, the trend in temperature will be upward," AccuWeather Long-Range Meteorologist Ed Vallee said, "though clouds and some rain may hinder any sustained warm-ups."
"As the last week of May approaches, the opportunity for a more sustained warm-up may be in the cards."
A cool shot may then send temperatures back toward normal by the first week of June, according to Vallee. Highs in the 70s are typical across the Northeast to start June.
Wednesday night of this week should also mark the last occurrence of frost this season in the central Appalachians.
"With the moderation upcoming, the threat for freezes will also come to an end for much of the country," Vallee said. "There may be a few instances where clear skies and light winds may allow for some frost along the Canadian border, but this threat will diminish toward the end of the month."
