Bonnie to drench US East Coast over Memorial Day weekend

Tropical Storm Bonnie developed off the coast of Georgia on Saturday afternoon and will approach the southeastern coast of the United States with downpours, building surf and an increasing breeze during Memorial Day weekend.
Bonnie has become the the second named tropical system of the 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season with Alex being the first official tropical storm and hurricane of the season.
Bonnie will have an impact on coastal areas, especially from Georgia to southeastern Virginia through the holiday weekend and perhaps into this week.

The biggest threats will be to bathers and boaters in the region.
"How rough conditions get will depend on how strong the system becomes, how close to the coast it gets and whether or not the system stalls," AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski said.
Bonnie is likely to take a swift northwestward into Sunday.

As the holiday weekend progresses, a breeze will increase and waves will build. Increasing wave action will cause the number and strength of rip currents to increase.
Enough rain will fall within a few dozen miles of the southeastern U.S. coast to spoil outdoor activities through Sunday and Memorial Day.
"Moderate to heavy rainfall is likely, especially over eastern South Carolina and eastern North Carolina from Saturday night into early next week," Kottlowski said.
There is a chance the rain becomes heavy enough to cause localized flooding.
Whether or not frequent downpours spread well inland over the Carolinas or spread northward along the mid-Atlantic coast will depend on the track of the storm later this weekend into this week. Should the system turn northward, winds, seas and surf will also build farther to the north along the coast.

Rain from Bonnie could affect Sunday night's NASCAR race in Charlotte, North Carolina.
A small zone of flooding is possible near and north of the path of the storm. How much flooding occurs will depend on the speed, track and strength of the storm and if the approach occurs around the time of high tide.
All marine and coastal interests should monitor the progress of Bonnie through the weekend.

The rest of the tropical Atlantic remains relatively quiet.
"We see no other signs of tropical development in the Atlantic over the next several days," Kottlowski said.
AccuWeather is projecting an above-average number of tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic basin this season.

I saw it one month later. It looked like a war zone. I did not see a single house with a roof. All the trees were snapped in half. Even Burger King and McDonald's were flattened. I will say that some good came from it. The homes were built stronger and they get a lot of income from the car racing track they were able to build. It looks much better today than before. I had a 2nd home in the Keys, so I made the trip frequently. From a friend I learned of a vegetable and fruit store that has everything you can imagine. They also make the best smoothies I have ever tasted. It's called "Robert's". When you get off the highway into FL. City, turn right at the light and head west for about 3 miles. They also have all kinds of jellies, jam that I have never seen anywhere!

Had to take a Science elective in college. I took Meteorolgy and it was a blast! For our final exam we had to track an actual Hurricane which occurred in the late 1960's, which flattened the gulf coast of Texas. None of us were old enough to remember that Hurricane so we had to plot the course based upon the data the Professor gave us. Two hours=Two minutes. Really cool final exam.

Anyway we here in CT. really NEED a Hurricane! A big one; slow mover

please. I remember standing outside during Gloria 1985, watching trees

snap in half and my mom yelling for me to get inside.

Andrew, my fiancé talked me into going on a "haunted walking tour" while we were vacationing in Key West a few years ago.
It of course, was lame at best, but the worst part of it was the leader of the tour who had dressed in a costume that appeared as though a couple of 3rd graders had made it for him.
But the worst part of the whole terrible experience was the fact that anytime a human being came within shouting distance of us, (and that was about every 15 seconds) he would very dramatically point his finger at them and scream, "YOU ARE DOOOOOOOMED!"
I really, REALLY wanted to punch that guy in the mouth...

Are we so hard up for weather news that a tropical storm is a headline?

Good time to prepare either way. Canned goods, new batteries as well as bottled water ( etc.) have uses that go beyond Storm preparedness...it all should be re-stocked at interval anyway to ensure freshness. Believe me i know what going without utility is ...i'd say its no picnic but in reality...

Yeah, when it's going to just rain is a great time to prepare for disaster. GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the storm is developng near the Bahamas will it effect the Bahamas after it moves north? I ask because we are going on a cruise on Monday to the Bahamas
Alex Sosnowski ·
No impacts there locally would dimnish. However, if your boat is coming in from the north and heading to the Bahamas, seas could be rough.

In NC, we like to buy 14 gallons of milk, 10 loaves of bread, and multiple cases of our favorite beverage. You mean there is more?

As long as it doesn't turn into a Sandy/Irene I'll live with the rain.
