Bitter cold to maintain firm grip on Germany into next week

Progressively colder air will pour across Germany into Monday with no sign of retreating quickly.
High temperatures will decline throughout the country this weekend into Monday.
While temperatures in some communities will still creep above freezing on Saturday, widespread subfreezing highs will follow for Sunday and Monday.

Monday's highs will be more representative of typical mid-January lows. When the cold peaks early next week, lows will be about 4 degrees Celsius (10 degrees Fahrenheit) below normal.
Highs of 1 to 4 C (33 to 40 F) and lows of 6 below zero to zero C (21 to 32 F) are more common this time of year.

Residents will definitely want to bundle up before heading outdoors and care should be taken to ensure animals have proper warmth. The homeless should be encouraged to head to shelters.
A storm system at the leading edge of the progressively colder air will deliver widespread snow showers to the country on Saturday, then southern areas on Sunday.

Following the late-week snowstorm, the snow this weekend will bring a fresh 8-15 cm (3-6 inches) to the Bavarian Alps with pockets of 2-8 cm (1-3 inches) and slick travel from eastern North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony to Bavaria, Saxony and in the higher terrain of Baden-Wurttemberg.
Aside from snow showers along the coast of the North Sea, the weekend will end on a drier note with partial sunshine in northern Germany. A bit more snow may drop into northern Germany on Monday and Monday night.
Fresh cold air will then follow and hold firm into at least the middle of next week.
