Much Cooler, Less Humid Air Sweeping Into Northeast

Following several days of very warm conditions and a buildup of humidity, much cooler and less humid air will continue to sweep into the Northeast through midweek.
A cold front and its thunderstorms will push across the region and offshore into the Atlantic by Wednesday. A few of the thunderstorms will turn gusty in southern New England.
Folks who mind cool weather will be reaching for jackets and long sleeves by Wednesday. Some gardeners over the interior Northeast may need to protect tender flowers and vegetables from frost.

According to AccuWeather.com Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams, "After the summerlike conditions from recent days, it will be back to spring for the middle and latter part of this week."
Temperatures will be slashed by 15-20 degrees Fahrenheit in many areas. High temperatures in the 80s to near 90 will be replaced by highs in the 50s and 60s on Wednesday.

"People who had a tough time adjusting to the higher humidity levels of late will get a break," Abrams said.
A breeze from the northwest will accompany the push of cool air so that AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures will be several degrees lower than actual temperatures through Wednesday evening.
The chilliest air will settle over the region Wednesday night. Under clear skies and diminishing winds, temperatures will drop to frosty levels in parts of West Virginia, western and northern Pennsylvania, western and northern New York state and northern New England.
Frost is forecast neither in the Interstate-95 corridor to the coast nor in most urban areas farther inland.

However, many people from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia, New York City and Boston may have to shut the windows Wednesday night. Fans and air conditioners will get a break.
With the aid of strong mid-May sunshine and light winds, RealFeel Temperatures will be on the rebound during the midday and afternoon hours Thursday and Friday.

Actual temperatures will recover to seasonable or slightly warmer-than-average levels on Thursday and Friday, especially during the afternoon hours. High temperatures in most areas will range from the middle 60s across the Appalachians to near 80 in southeastern Virginia.
The nights will still be cool, but the risk of frost will come to an end over the interior.
"The Northeast will serve as the battleground between warmer air attempting to surge back to the north and stubborn cooler air," stated AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski.
"Which air mass wins out will determine which communities experience another taste of summer or a more typical mid-May weekend," she added. "The cooler air may also try to work back to the southeast -- via a backdoor cold front -- later in the weekend."
