May 26 marks a deadly day in U.S. history in terms of tornadoes. Among the deadly tornadoes that have occurred on this date was the tornado swarm of 1917 that killed 101 people in central Illinois, mostly in the Mattoon and Charleston areas. The swarm of tornadoes, comprised of 4 to 8 tornadoes, left a nearly 300-mile swath of destruction and traveled over a span of seven hours and 20 minutes. The tornado that devastated Mattoon and Charleston tore through with F4 intensity.
