Cooldown Spreads Through the Midwest and Northeast

A cold front has made its way through the Midwest to start this week, dropping temperatures as much as 30 degrees below mid-May averages. Cooler temperatures will also return to the Northeast on Wednesday.
Here's an overview of the forecast for both regions.

Midwest: Chill Comes With Snow

Forecast Highs

The cooldown began to invade the Midwest Sunday into Monday, but has now engulfed much of the region.
In North Dakota, the cold air mass in combination with a low-pressure system resulted in snow accumulations of an inch or two across parts of the state late Sunday into early Monday. The brisk winds from that area of low pressure kept wind chills in the 20s early Monday afternoon in parts of eastern North Dakota and northern Minnesota.
On Tuesday morning, low temperatures were in the 20s and 30s in the northern Plains and Upper Midwest. Snow was reported in northern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Bismarck, North Dakota, set a daily record low of 25 degrees and Grand Forks, North Dakota also set a new daily record low of 27 degrees.
Snow fell at the National Weather Service office in Gaylord, Michigan Tuesday evening.
Temperatures dipped into the upper 20s Wednesday morning in northern Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan. Chatham, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, plunged to 23 degrees early Wednesday.
Farther south and east, Chicago held in the 50s on Tuesday afternoon and may struggle to reach 50 on Wednesday. The average high in the Windy City for this time of year is about 70 degrees. Des Moines, Iowa, was also in the 50s on Tuesday afternoon and will likely see highs stay in the 50s again on Wednesday.

The cooler air combined with rain will also keep the central Plains and the adjacent Front Range of the Rockies cool through midweek. Snow was even reported in the Colorado Rockies, the panhandle of Nebraska and the Black Hills of South Dakota Tuesday and Tuesday night.
High temperatures on Wednesday will hold in the 50s along the I-70 corridor from St. Louis to Kansas City and Denver.
The good news is that milder air will return to much of the Midwest by this weekend.

Northeast: Two Sources of Cooler Air

Forecast Highs

An easterly wind flow off the Atlantic brought cooler temperatures to parts of the coastal Northeast on Monday.
Boston was in the 50s on Monday afternoon, while New York City held in the 60s. Temperatures were milder on Tuesday ahead of the approaching cold front coming from the Midwest.
By Wednesday, much of the interior Northeast and Mid-Atlantic will see temperatures near or even below mid-May averages.
After upper 80s and low 90s to start the week, Washington, D.C. will retreat to the more comfortable 70s by Wednesday. Pittsburgh will see highs in the 60s on Wednesday after low 80s and middle 70s Monday and Tuesday.
