Cooldown Incoming to the Midwest, Northeast

A cold front will slice through the Midwest to start this week, dropping temperatures as much as 20 degrees below mid-May averages. Cooler temperatures will also return to the Northeast, but from two different sources.
Here's an overview of the forecast for both regions.

Midwest: Chill Comes With Snow

Forecast Highs

The cooldown will engulf the Upper Midwest and northern Plains to start the week.
In North Dakota, the cold air mass combined with a low-pressure system will result in wind-driven snow for parts of the state Sunday night through early Monday. Snow or a rain/snow mix is also possible in far northern Minnesota Monday.

Farther east, highs may not get out of the 40s on Monday in Minneapolis-St. Paul, and then hold in the 50s on Tuesday. Chicago may fail to rise out of the 50s on both Tuesday and Wednesday. The average high in the Windy City for this time of year is about 70 degrees.

The cooler air combined with rain will also keep the central Plains and the adjacent Front Range of the Rockies cool through midweek. Denver will see highs in the 40s or 50s Monday through Wednesday.
The good news is that milder air will return to much of the Midwest by late this week or next weekend.

Northeast: Two Sources of Cooler Air

Forecast Highs

An easterly wind flow off the Atlantic will bring cooler temperatures to parts of the coastal Northeast starting Monday.
Boston may not rise out of the 50s to start the week, while New York City holds in the 60s. Temperatures will then rise again on Tuesday ahead of the approaching cold front coming from the Midwest.
By Wednesday, much of the interior Northeast and Mid-Atlantic will see temperatures near or even below mid-May averages.
After upper 80s to start the week, Washington, D.C. will retreat to the more comfortable 70s by Wednesday. Pittsburgh will see highs in the 60s on Wednesday after low 80s and upper 70s Monday and Tuesday.
