Midweek Storm to Drench the Northeast

Umbrellas will be put to good use across the Northeast this week as a low pressure system looks to bring several days of rain to the region.
Monday may turn out to be the best day of the week for spending time outdoors before rain moves in from the Midwest for Tuesday.
The low pressure system responsible for the rain will then set up shop off the region's coast, spinning just east of Boston. As a result, several cloudy, wet and breezy days are in store from Maine through Maryland.

The steadiest rain is expected to focus along eastern New England with showers and drizzle stretching all the way down into Virginia and back across Pennsylvania.
This can cause travel delays along the I-95 corridor, especially for motorists trying to drive in the rain.
Flooding may also occur due to the persistent rain, particularly in New England where trees have already shed a majority of their leaves.
The leaves on the ground can be washed away into streams and storm drains, disrupting the water flow and causing flooding issues. Low-lying and poor drainage areas are the most susceptible for this type of flooding.

Despite the negative impacts that the rain will bring, it will have some positive impacts.
Since the start of September, many locations in the Northeast have received well below-normal rainfall amounts, leaving the ground drier than normal.
This includes cities such as Providence, Rhode Island, which has only received 45 percent of their normal rainfall from Sept. 1 to Oct. 18.

The low pressure system will begin to depart the Northeast on Friday allowing for dry conditions to build back over part of the region.
However, drenching rain is still expected over much of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts to close out the week.
Dry weather is forecast to make a full return to the Northeast for the first part of the weekend, making for great weather for college football games, 5K runs and other outdoor activities.
