Heavy Rain, Flooding Threatens Ohio Valley Tuesday Night

Following a severe thunderstorm outbreak Sunday night into Monday across the central United States, heavy rain will blast through the Ohio Valley while severe storms rattle the areas of the Carolinas.
A cold front and upper-level energy from the system will be responsible for igniting a line of powerful storms from near Columbia, South Carolina, to Jacksonville, Florida, which will continue into Tuesday night.
"While there can still be a stronger thunderstorm across parts of North Carolina and South Carolina through midnight or so, the threat for widespread severe weather will be minimal for the rest of the night," AccuWeather Meteorologist Carl Erickson said.
A large swath of rain with heavier downpours will move slowly from west to east across the upper Ohio Valley and Appalachians overnight.
By daybreak, this band of heavier rain will be drenching western parts of New York and Pennsylvania southward through Virginia and central North Carolina and coastal South Carolina, Erickson added.
Localized flooding will be a threat in these areas, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Some cities that may have slower travel and delays due to the rain include Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Charlottesville, Virginia, Raleigh and Myrtle Beach.

Motorists will want to be extra cautious if they are caught out in a storm. Alternative routes may be needed due to road closures.

Heavy rain will also stretch all the way to the eastern Great Lakes and may be accompanied by gusty winds, although the severe threat will be limited. Flooding could still arise from the heavy rainfall though.
"The rain can overwhelm storm drains, especially those blocked with fallen leaves," said AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
It will be a much different day across the Southeast on Wednesday as dry, cooler and less humid air settles into much of the region. However, a windswept rain will affect areas farther east across New York, Pennsylvania and the eastern Carolinas.

Temperatures will drop behind the system, but a deep cold plunge is not expected. Tranquil and pleasantly warm weather will build into much of the East later this week in wake of this system.
