WeatherWhys for September 23,2014 from accuweather.com

On average, substantial cooling takes place across Canada and the extreme northern U.S. from late September through October as much less heat energy is absorbed by the ground. At the same time, storms are more potent as the jet stream strengthens and shifts south. Tropical storms remain a threat as the ocean waters remain warm.
