Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday,September 4,2014

A low pressure system will drift across the northern tier of the country on Thursday, while an onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico will move across the Southeast.

A strong area of low pressure is forecast to drift east northeastward over the northern Plains and the upper Midwest on Thursday. As this system interacts with warm, muggy air over the nation’s midsection, strong to severe thunderstorms will develop across the upper Midwest and the western Great Lakes. Severe thunderstorms will be possible over Wisconsin and northwest Michigan. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. Additionally, heavy rain associated with these thunderstorms will bring a slight chance of flash flooding to the upper Mississippi Valley. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system will extend across the central Plains, the central Rockies and the Great Basin. As monsoonal moisture collides with this frontal boundary, isolated showers and thunderstorms will develop over the Four Corners. High pressure over the eastern Pacific will keep conditions mostly clear across the West Coast on Thursday.

Meanwhile, an onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico will push a moist air mass across the Gulf Coast and the Southeast. Strong thunderstorms are forecast to develop over the eastern Gulf Coast and the Southeast, while scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible over the western and central Gulf Coast, as well as the Mid-Atlantic. The Northeast will avoid wet weather on Thursday.
