A cold front will stretch from the southern Plains to the eastern Great Lakes on Tuesday, while a separate cold front will approach the Pacific Northwest.
A cold front is forecast to extend across the southern Plains, the middle Mississippi Valley, the Ohio Valley and the eastern Great Lakes. As this cold front interacts with warm, muggy air streaming northward from the Gulf of Mexico, thunderstorms will develop over the central and eastern thirds of the country. The strongest storms are expected over the middle Mississippi Valley, the Ohio Valley and the Northeast. Heavy rain associated with these thunderstorms will bring a chance of flash flooding to Ohio, northern West Virginia and western Pennsylvania. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will also be possible over the lower Mississippi Valley, the Gulf Coast and the Southeast. The Mid-Atlantic will stay mostly clear of wet weather.
Meanwhile, scattered showers will trail the aforementioned cold front over portions of the northern Plains and the upper Mississippi Valley. High pressure will build over the Great Basin and the Intermountain West, keeping conditions warm and dry over the central and southern Rockies, as well as the Southwest.
A cold front is forecast to move east southeastward over the northeastern corner of the country. Showers will develop ahead of this frontal boundary over parts of Washington, northern Oregon, Idaho and Montana. The remainder of the West Coast will avoid precipitation.
