Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday,September 11,2014

A strong low pressure system will move across the Great Lakes on Thursday, while winter like conditions will develop across the northern tier of the country.

A strong area of low pressure will move east northeastward across the eastern Great Lakes and southeast Canada. This system will usher rain and thunderstorms across parts of the New England on Thursday. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system will extend southwestward across the eastern Great Lakes, the Ohio Valley, the middle Mississippi Valley and the southern Plains. As this cold front collides with warm, muggy air over the central and eastern thirds of the country, numerous areas of thunderstorms will form across a handful of states. Severe thunderstorms will be possible across eastern Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, southeast Pennsylvania and New Jersey. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. Isolated thunderstorms will also develop over the Tennessee Valley, the lower and middle Mississippi Valley and the southern Plains on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a major weather change will take place across the Intermountain West and the Plains as a cold air mass trails the aforementioned cold front. Moderate to heavy snow will sweep across the northern Rockies and the northern Plains, while a mixture of rain and snow will be possible over the central Rockies and the central high Plains. A ridge of high pressure over the eastern Pacific will keep conditions clear across the West Coast on Thursday.
