An area of low pressure that moved across northern Italy on Monday with showers and thunderstorms will slide farther south and east into Wednesday. Showers and thunderstorms will increase the risk for flooding from eastern Italy into the Balkans, Greece and Bulgaria.
Tuesday night, the heavy rain threat will be primarily across east-central coast of Italy, southern Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania and northern Greece. Rainfall will exceed 50 millimeters (2 inches) in some areas which can lead to ponding on roadways and flooding in poor drainage areas.

Through Wednesday, the low will shift from eastern Italy into Bulgaria. Daily downpours will soak areas from the Balkans into Greece. Total rainfall of 25-50 millimeters (1-2 inches) is expected with local amounts over 75 millimeters (3 inches). Flooding will be the greatest threat; however, areas that have rugged terrain could also experience mudslides.
The heaviest rainfall will spread into eastern Greece, Bulgaria and far northwest Turkey on Wednesday where flash flooding will be a threat as thunderstorms with torrential downpours can bring a quick 25 millimeters (1 inch) of rainfall.
Many locations in southern Europe have received above-average rainfall through August, so the flooding threat will be elevated in these areas. Valjevo, Serbia, reported over 200 percent of normal rainfall during the month, totaling 181 millimeters (7.13 inches).

On Thursday, showers and thunderstorms will become less widespread; however, due to prior rainfall, flooding will still be a concern across the region.
The storm will weaken beyond Thursday, diminishing the threat of widespread flooding problems. However, the storm system will continue to produce scattered showers and thunderstorms over the same region into the weekend which could lead to some isolated flooding in areas that experienced the heaviest rain earlier in the week.
