Weather Underground Forecast for Tuesday,August 12,2014

An area of low pressure will sweep across the Great Lakes on Tuesday, while monsoonal thunderstorms will affect the western half of the country.

A strong low pressure system will move east northeastward over the Great Lakes. This system will usher showers and thunderstorms across the upper Midwest, the Great Lakes and parts of the Northeast. Heavy rain is forecast to develop over the northern Mid-Atlantic and southern New England, which could lead to flash flooding over western Massachusetts, western Connecticut, southeast New York, eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and parts of Maryland. Additionally, a cold front associated with this system will extend south southwestward. As this cold front collides with warm, muggy air from the Gulf of Mexico, widespread rain and thunderstorms will develop across the Ohio Valley, the Tennessee Valley, the Deep South and the Gulf Coast. A separate low pressure system will linger over the Southeast. Thunderstorms will also accompany this system on Tuesday.

A ridge of high pressure will build over the northern Plains, bringing dry conditions to much of the Plains and the Mississippi Valley. Just to the west, monsoonal moisture will spread across the Intermountain West, the Great Basin and the Southwest. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will be possible across the western half of the country, which will bring a threat of flash flooding to valleys adjacent to sloped terrain. .
