Congress will vote on a bill Friday that would give $9.7 billion to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which has been hard hit with claims in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has warned Congress that the NFIP funds will be depleted by next week if more money is not provided.
The additional funding would allow the program to continue providing insurance payouts to those affected by Sandy.
About 140,000 Sandy-related flood insurance claims have been filed, according to FEMA. Many people, however, have only received partial payouts, halting the rebuilding process.
Hurricane Sandy came onshore on the evening of October 29, 2012, along the coast of southern New Jersey causing billions of dollars in damage.
