The southeastern quadrant of the nation kicked off the New Year with unsettled weather activity as a frontal system advanced across the southeastern corner of the nation. Ahead of this storm, ample moisture streamed out of the Gulf of Mexico and aided in producing moderate to periodically heavy rain and thunderstorms from the western and central Gulf Coasts northeastward through the Carolinas. Heavier rains and prolonged showers raised concerns of localized flooding in the Southeast. In addition to rainy weather, cold air from the north allowed for areas of the Ohio Valley through Kansas to experience light snow showers through the day.

Elsewhere in the nation, outside of morning rain and snow showers in parts of the Lower Pacific Northwest, much of the West experienced generally dry conditions. Meanwhile, a few light snow showers developed downwind of the Great Lakes, while much of the Great Lakes and Northeast experienced cooler daytime highs
