On this date back in 1954 Hurricane Hazel made landfall near the North
Carolina and South Carolina border. The storm caused over $2.5 billion
in damage and caused the deaths of over 1,000 people in Haiti, 95 in the
United States, 81 in Canada and 6 in the Bahamas. Hazel was the
strongest hurricane on record ever to strike so far to the north.
