Over 50 vehicles involved in pileup along snowy Interstate 80 in Pennsylvania

Multiple accidents were reported on Interstate 80 in western Pennsylvania Thursday morning as bands of lake-effect snow swept across the state.
Parts of I-80 eastbound were shut down in Jefferson County around mile marker 79 in northwestern Pennsylvania, due to an accident shortly after 8 a.m, according to ExploreClarion.com. Multiple tractor trailers were involved in an accident around 8:06 a.m. in Washington Township, near mile marker 95.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) said that as many as 59 vehicles were involved in the crash in Jefferson County. Injuries have been reported but the severity of those injuries is unclear, according to WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh.
Parts of I-80 in Mercer County was also shut down due to a multi-vehicle accident. However that portion of the highway was expected to reopen by 11 a.m., according to WKBN in Youngstown, Ohio.
PennDOT reduced speeds to 45 mph on I-80 in Mercer, Venango, Clarion and Jefferson counties.
The possibility of dangerous snow squalls will continue through Thursday night in parts of the Northeast.

Extreme meteorologist Reed Timmer was on the scene to report heavy snowfall near Syracuse , New York, Thursday morning. Similar conditions were reported in Pennsylvania when lake-effect snow bands moved across the state. Several accidents were reported on Interstate 80 in western Pennsylvania.
