Below-zero temperatures to expand across US during 3rd week of December

A new batch of arctic air will blast into the United States in the wake of a cross-country storm with snow, ice and rain this weekend.
The main thrust of the new arctic blast will be felt over the Central states from Saturday night to Monday.
Fresh, deep snowcover will create ideal conditions for the cold air to spread southward from Canada to the northern and central Plains and part of the Midwest. As a result, the air coming into these locations will be even colder than that of this week.
This weekend, actual temperatures will plummet at night to minus 30 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit from portions Montana and Wyoming to parts of the Dakotas, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Temperatures dipping to between 20 and 10 below zero are in store from parts of Colorado to portions of Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois.
Subzero nighttime temperatures will extend as far to the south as parts of New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Indiana and Michigan.
After plummeting to near zero by Sunday morning, temperatures may struggle to stay above zero on Sunday afternoon around Chicago, according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Bill Deger.

"Fans heading to the matchup between the Bears and Packers may experience the coldest NFL game ever played at Soldier Field during Sunday afternoon," Deger said. "AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures will average close to 10 below zero."
Even during the day, the movement of air ranging from a slight breeze to strong winds combined with other conditions will push AccuWeather RealFeel Temperatures to dangerous and even life-threatening levels for those without shelter or not properly dressed. At times, RealFeel Temperatures may dip to 25 degrees lower than the actual temperature.

What is a polar vortex?

The cold air will briefly settle into California and the deserts this weekend. Temperatures over the Inland Empire in Southern California will dip to near freezing at night, including in some of the agricultural areas.
From Sunday night to Tuesday, the new batch of frigid air will settle into the Northeast, but with less force than that over the Central states. As a result, the air may deliver temperatures a few degrees higher than that of Dec. 15-16.
Even so, temperatures will plunge 25 to 30 degrees and may struggle to rise out of the teens in the central and northern Appalachians and to reach the freezing mark in New York City. During Sunday night and Monday night, temperatures will dip to near zero over the central Appalachians and well below zero in northern New England.
In the Southeast states, the cold air is likely to lose most of its sting. However, temperatures will still plummet from Sunday's warmth. Compared to highs on Sunday in the 60s, 70s and 80s, parts of the Southeast will have high temperatures 25 to 30 degrees lower on Monday and Tuesday.
The cold air will be a boost for the skiing industry heading into the holidays. Even where snow fails to make an appearance, some resorts will be able to make snow around the clock in order to build up a deep base of snow into early next week.
For those who have already had enough with the frigid conditions, there is some good news. However, for those hoping for a white Christmas, there may be complications.
While chilly air and wintry precipitation may remain in some locations, the arctic air will retreat prior to the Christmas weekend.

Can y'all fix your website to where the videos don't play unless you click the button? My eardrums almost burst every time I click an article because it plays w/o me knowing, at full volume. :(

i second the motion. i wish all websites were like that. if someone wants to play the video.. they can click play. the exception would be if it was an obvious video thing like youtube or CBS or something like that.

I simply put my volume on Mute while on the internet and never bother to watch the videos

Is freezing to death in record cold winters really part of global warming?
James Murphree
Yes it is, it's called climate change.

The whole solar system is heating up, not just earth, all the planets are. We are in a part of the universe we've never been in before with lots of stardust that's heating up the planets. Also the sun is cooling down and getting more cool spots which weakens our magnetic fields for the poles causing them to shift out of place and move further away from where they originally were. The poles are changing, causing more arctic air to move towards the United States more often instead of above us.

Bigger highs in the Pacific- that reach way into the Arctic- due to ocean warming-- translate to more cold polar air pouring down into the US on their eastern edge. You can see it in the satellite pictures VERY clearly-- normal but magnified. Clockwise around Highs CCW around lows. Got it yet?

22ish years ago it was -75 in chicago. This is nothing, but i do agree with you.

David Cossa deep ice cores proved co2 has gone up. This is before you run numbers on displacement of gas in ice due to compression and time. So thats a issue with their science. Phisics tell us its not a good source of data. We also know we are still coming out of the last ice age due to us having ice caps and s forest under antarticas ice proving ice is normaly not on antartica.Global warming is normal and bearly if at all caused by humans. Bet ya 20 bucks if you run the numbers co2 is near constant.

surprising article. i was waiting for the boom to drop. i was waiting for blame to be placed on 'climate change' cause you drive a suv, neither mind Gore flies private planes all over.
i was waiting for the part that said 'coldest ever'. like they got measurements going back thousands of years. i have found out all weather is relative, that is relative to how old one is. if you did not experience it, so many believe it did not happen. take flooding down here in Texas and Louisiana. yep. has happened before. time and again. like i told some people moving in near us... see those plants over there? see those rings a few feet off the ground on those trees? yep, it floods around here and that is at least how high the water has gotten before.
i just love the apocalyptic covering over storms like this. lol.

So since dinosaurs once roamed where my backyard is, I won't be shocked if T rex traipses through it tomorrow,,happened before, right, so no big deal, completely normal!

You are basically saying that it will take at LEAST 1000 years of very careful scientific record keeping to prove a damned thing, screw what the computer models say, let's all just shut up and wait! that about sum it up? I call that a copout just like saying whatever the record weather is it probably happened in 123,567 BC so no big deal - and no one can prove you wrong so you win!

It no longer makes a difference whether you use wind chills or rea temps so why not just do away with the mundane temps and go with the sensationalist ones. Some will never catch on that no matter how hard the wind blows at 33F , water will not freeze. The obtuse have record highs in their backyard all the time because their thermometer is in the sun! So why not go with in the sun temps too!- for more shock value. A high of 167 just has more effect than a mere 90F-- same deal as with wind chills

Um , no El Nino this year to allow Gulf Air to keep the cold Arctic air at bay so shiver on dudes-- looks like a January Thaw is in the offing, though.
Southern Gulf Coast of Texas -- Corpus, Brownsville--THE place to be in winter, way better than AZ
David Cossa
Go ahead, toss out all he "questionable" land temp records you feel like-- but very accurate sea buoy thermometers and river gauges in place for 150 years do not lie- their measurments on a decadal basis are up down or the same-- so which is it

Oh mosh, it's GLOBAL WARMING!!
