Weather Underground midday recap for Thursday,September 8,2016

Several clusters of thunderstorms impacted areas from the Plains to the Northeast on Thursday, while a dry weather pattern prevailed across the West Coast.

A cold frontal boundary stretched southwestward from the western Great Lakes to the central Plains. As this frontal boundary transitioned eastward, it interacted with warm and moist air from the Gulf of Mexico. This interaction helped generate strong thunderstorms from the central Plains to the Northeast. Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued across Upstate New York on Thursday. New Haven, N.Y., reported several wires down due to gusty winds. Additionally, flood warnings were issued in southwest Wisconsin and western Missouri. Columbia, Mo., reported a midday total of 2.84 inches of rain. Lincoln, Ill., reported a midday total of 2.10 inches of rain.

Temperatures rose above 90 degrees across a handful of states east of the Continental Divide. Heat advisories were issued in eastern Oklahoma, eastern Maryland, Delaware and eastern Pennsylvania. Easton, Md., recorded a midday high of 89 degrees with a head index of 97 degrees. Dover Air Force Base, Del., recorded a midday high of 88 degrees with a heat index of 100 degrees.

Meanwhile, scattered showers and thunderstorms developed across the upper Intermountain West and the northern Plains. High pressure over the eastern Pacific kept most states west of the Continental Divide clear of precipitation. Los Angeles, Calif., recorded a midday high of 77 degrees. Seattle, Wash., recorded a midday high of 68 degrees.
