Karl Beginning to Strengthen; Tropical Storm Warning Issued For Bermuda

September 22,2016
Karl is now a tropical storm again and continues to strengthen. Karl will eventually pass near or just south of Bermuda as curves northeastward into the open Atlantic Ocean. Karl is forecast to strengthen into the weekend.
As of Thursday evening, Karl was centered just 430 miles south of Bermuda.

Current Storm Information
A tropical storm warning has been issued for Bermuda by the Bermuda Weather Service. This means tropical storm conditions (winds 39 mph or greater) are likely in the next 36 hours.

Karl has been battling wind shear for days, which has prevented it from strengthening until today. That wind shear is forecast to relax allowing Karl to intensify over the next couple of days. Warmer ocean waters may also assist in helping Karl to gain some steam.

Projected Path
Karl will continue to move northwest, then north, before eventually taking a sharp turn northeast this weekend. How sharp the turn is in relation to Bermuda will determine how close it passes to the archipelago this weekend, and thus the impacts there.
(FORECAST: Bermuda)
Residents and visitors of Bermuda should still monitor the progress of Karl closely for any forecast changes.
Tropical storm-force winds should start arriving on Friday evening. Bermuda may also see 1-3 inches of rain from Karl.
High surf has already arrived in Bermuda and will continue into the weekend, along with dangerous rip currents.
Karl is no threat to the U.S., other than the possible generation of some larger swells reaching the East Coast.
