Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday,September 22,2016

A deep trough of low pressure will bring impacts to the western third of the country on Thursday, while a frontal system extends from the Northeast to the Plains.

An area of low pressure will deepen over the Pacific Northwest and the Great Basin. This system, combined with a cold frontal boundary, will generate light to moderate rain and isolated thunderstorms from the upper Intermountain West to the Desert Southwest. A blast of cool air will trail this frontal boundary. This air mass will support the development of high elevation snow in the Sierra Nevada, the Cascades, the Wasatch and the Rockies.

Meanwhile, a frontal boundary will extend west southwestward over New England, Upstate New York, the Great Lakes, the upper Mississippi Valley and the central Plains. Light to moderate rain and embedded thunderstorms will develop along and near this frontal boundary over a handful of states. A wave of low pressure will form along the tail end of the frontal boundary, which will lead to moderate to heavy rain in the northern Plains and the upper Midwest. Flash flooding will be a concern for southern Minnesota, Iowa, northeast Nebraska and southeast South Dakota.

Further to the east, a disorganized area of low pressure will keep scattered showers and thunderstorms in the forecast for the southern Mid-Atlantic and the Southeast. Additionally, an onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico will bring stormy weather to parts of the western Gulf Coast.
