Severe storms to rattle northern Plains through Labor Day

Rounds of severe thunderstorms will target the northern Plains through the balance of the extended holiday weekend, reaching South Dakota to the western shores of the Great Lakes.
These storms could interrupt Labor Day festivities for people in Rapid City and Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Minneapolis and Duluth, Minnesota.

Sunday will start off with some spotty showers and thunderstorms across the northern Plains, but the threat of severe storms will hold off until the afternoon.
Storms that develop during the afternoon and evening hours will be capable of producing damaging winds higher than 60 mph, hail as large as golf balls and even isolated tornadoes.
Rain and thunderstorms may also disrupt outdoor activities northward into southern Manitoba and western Ontario, but little is expected in terms of severe weather across this area.

Another round of severe weather is on tap for Monday with the area at risk shifting to the east.
"The greatest potential for a thunderstorm to impact outdoor activities [on Labor Day] will be in the Upper Midwest, where severe thunderstorms will erupt in the afternoon," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rathbun.
These storms will bring the same risk as those on Sunday, according to Rathbun.
Those partaking in outdoor holiday festivities across this area should keep an eye and ear to the sky and seek shelter when a storm is approaching and remain there until the storm has passed.
People farther south in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Chicago will likely be far enough south to not be impacted by the severe weather.

The risk of showers and thunderstorms will continue across the region through the middle of the week from Nebraska through Wisconsin.
These additional rounds of rain will increase the risk of flooding, especially in areas that receive hard rain during the Labor Day weekend.
