Severe Storms Expected in the Southern Plains Through Early Sunday

Published: September 17, 2016 A potent disturbance aloft, a surface cold front and ample moisture could be enough to produce severe thunderstorms overnight into Sunday morning in west and southwestern Texas.

Some locations could see damaging winds, large hail and locally heavy rain.

Into Sunday Morning
  • Forecast: Strong to severe storms may continue toward dawn in southwestern and western Texas. 
  • Threats: These thunderstorms may contain large hail and gusty winds.

Setup For Severe Weather


Late Week Jet Stream Forecast
In the upper atmosphere, a southwesterly flow of moisture and energy moves around low pressure aloft and into the southern Plains. These elements will be responsible for triggering severe thunderstorms into Sunday morning.
A frontal boundary and Gulf moisture will team up to produce thunderstorms across the southern Plains Saturday



































At the surface, a stalled front will extend from New Mexico through the southern Plains
The front will interact with ample moisture coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, resulting in thunderstorms.

Some of these thunderstorms will turn severe with damaging winds and large hail.
