Weather Underground Forecast for Tuesday,June 21,2016

Active weather will impact areas from the Mid-Atlantic to the Plains on Tuesday, while extreme heat continues across the Southwest.

A slow moving cold front will stretch south and westward across New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the middle Mississippi Valley and the central Plains. This frontal boundary will be the focal point for rain and thunderstorms. Severe thunderstorms will be possible across southern Maryland, Virginia, southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and northeast Tennessee. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. Heavy rain could lead to flash flooding in the central Appalachians. Most areas across the Southeast will stay clear of precipitation.

Meanwhile, the tail end of this frontal boundary will transition into a warm front. This warm front will interact with an approaching low pressure system over the Rockies, which will lead to strong to severe thunderstorms over the northern Plains and the Midwest. Severe thunderstorms will be possible over several states, including eastern Montana, southwest North Dakota, northwest South Dakota, eastern Nebraska, Iowa, northern Missouri and northwest Illinois. These thunderstorms could produce straight line winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes. Prolonged heavy rain will bring threats of flash flooding to eastern South Dakota, southern Minnesota, Iowa, northeast Missouri and western Illinois.

Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will be possible in the southern Rockies. The Desert Southwest, the Intermountain West and the southern Plains will continue to experience very warm weather on Tuesday. Afternoon temperatures will be 10 to 20 degrees above normal for many locations.
