Severe storms to rattle midwestern US on Wednesday

Following a couple of days of locally heavy, gusty thunderstorms in parts of the central and eastern United States, the risk of violent thunderstorms will increase over part of the Midwest on Wednesday.
Big storms erupted over the western part of the Dakotas and eastern Montana, as well as parts of Iowa, during Tuesday night.
Some of these storms will drift southeastward bringing the potential to threaten lives and cause property damage from parts of Iowa to parts of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia and Pennsylvania during Wednesday.

Exactly which portions of these states will be hit the hardest will depend on the track of a storm system originating from the Northwest and where the boundary of hot, humid air versus cooler, drier air sets up.
"Through Wednesday night, the greatest and most widespread threat from the storms will be damaging wind gusts and flash flooding," according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Zapolski.

"However, some of the storms will bring the potential for large hail," he said.
A few tornadoes could also be spawned from some of the strongest storms.
Where the storms enter metro areas or approach major airports, significant disruptions to travel may occur.
The storms in the Midwest are likely to occur in multiple rounds through Wednesday night.
"The first round will likely occur during the morning hours across the upper part of the Mississippi Valley and will spread toward the Great Lakes with heavy rain and flash flooding being the biggest threat," according to AccuWeather Storm Warning Meteorologist Alex Avalos.

"Another round of storms is likely during the afternoon and could produce a few tornadoes around the Great Lakes region, including the Chicago area," Avalos said.
"During Wednesday night, another round of storms will likely slice southeastward across the Great Lakes region and is most likely to bring a line of severe thunderstorms with the greatest threat being damaging winds," Avalos said.
Through Wednesday night, cities that could be hit by severe thunderstorms include Davenport, Iowa; Chicago and Peoria, Illinois; Milwaukee; Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Indiana; Detroit and Grand Rapids, Michigan; Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio; Huntington and Morgantown, West Virginia; and Pittsburgh.
Cleveland Cavaliers fans heading to celebrate with the team during the NBA championship victory parade on Wednesday should stay alert for storms. The most likely time for thunderstorms and heavy rain in Cleveland is during the evening.

No kidding. I think I'd rather deal with 120 degrees than having to live in my basement all summer because of warnings.

Sooooo tired of living here, and destructive storms and power outages for days, and heat and humidity. I have to work tomorrow so this should be fun. Looks like we're going to get pounded during both rush hours. I hate summer and spring here...can't wait to move.

Odds of your neighborhood being hit by such a storm are extremely low, but better safe than sorry for the handful of potential dangerous storms per year.

A tornado wouldn't be too great but tons of rain in Parma, Michigan would sure be beneficial.

A great number of places could stand a good soaking. The sun evaporates 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch of moisture from the ground this time of the year. Things can dry out quickly.

Willd the storms be mostly during the day in the Chicago area or will they be at night????
Alex Sosnowski ·
That is a tough call at this point. We suspect there will be one or more thunderstorm complexes that get going and begin to roll southeastward. Timing will be revealed as these form.

Not for Detroit, Right?
Alex Sosnowski ·
Not at this time, but path the storms will take is not 100 set in stone yet. If warm front lifts farther to the northeast, then severe storms could get into more of lower Michigan than we have at this time. This is not to say it can't rain and thunder in Detroit on Wed, because it probably will.
