Special Delivery: The Meteorology of FedEx

By: Dr. Marshall Shepherd , 11:43AM,GMT on December 11,2015

It is the holiday season, and many of you are undoubtedly waiting on packages or shipping them. It's not that I am a psychic, but I bet several of those packages will be handled by FedEx. FedEx has a lot of planes, trucks, and human resources. Soooooo...you can bet that the weather is a central part of their operations.

In fact, the weather is so important to FedEx that they have their own Meteorology Department. Yep, FedEx.

Between the hours of 10pm and 6am the Memphis airport becomes the busiest airport in the world....thanks in large part to FedEx...

FedEx delivers millions of packages a day, and their busiest time of year is upon us. There is a team of meteorologists at FedEx that plays a critical role in helping to make sure you get your package on time.

We've invited Kory Gempler, Manager of FedEx's Weather Department, to Weather Geeks to discuss their operation, what worries him at night, the meteorology that FedEx worries about, and more. Oh and trust me, the aviation and air traffic video that we "Geek Out" on in the latter half of the show is MUST SEE. We also have some WxGeek Trivia for you.

Be sure to watch Weather Geeks this Sunday at Noon ET (11 am CT, 10 am MT, 9 am PT) and tell a friend.

P.S. Midway through Sunday's show, I will be Tweeting some breaking news about Weather Geeks and AMS. Be sure to watch the show so that you don't miss it.
