The most intense hurricane to strike the United States was the Labor Day Storm of 1935. The storm smashed across the Florida Keys on Sept. 2nd with winds to 185 mph, completely demolishing a few of the Keys. However, Key West escaped the worst of the storm since it was tightly wound.
