Rainy Weekend Coming to Seattle

By Brian Thompson, Meteorologist

A soggy weekend continues for the Seattle area.
The jet stream, a riverlike feature of fast winds in the upper atmosphere, is beginning to strengthen and dip farther south as the season changes. This is pulling more disturbances into the Pacific Northwest and will be the continuing trend.

A powerful storm from the Gulf of Alaska is bringing the rain to the Northwest.
Steadier, heavier periods of rain will likely develop over the weekend as disturbances rotate around the storm. Strong, gusty winds will also develop, especially along the coast.
The month of September has already been a soaker in the weather books. Seattle normally has about 1.5 inches in the month of September. As of Sept. 27, the gauge reads 3.07 inches and that number will likely increase significantly over the weekend.

Snow levels will initially be high over the weekend in the Cascades, with only the highest peaks above 9,000 feet receiving snow. However, snow levels will lower to around 6,000 feet by Monday. Significant snow is generally expected to remain above pass level for most locations, so major travel problems are not anticipated due to the snow.
