During the first week of December, average temperatures range from a low in the middle 30s to a high in the upper 40s in the city.
A storm forecast to impact the Pacific coast on Thursday may reach the mid-Atlantic coast on Tuesday with rain.
In the wake of the storm next week, there are no signs of lasting cold air emptying into the Eastern states. A strong El Niño will help keep the polar vortex at bay near the Arctic Circle.
For those hoping for snow leading up to the holiday season, the persistent mild weather will make for quite a challenge for storms to bring snow to the area.
The strong El Niño winters (December through February) of 1972-73 and 1997-98 only brought 0.1 of an inch of snow to Washington, D.C. In Baltimore, snowfall during the 1972-73 winter was only 1.2 inches with 3.2 inches during the winter of 1997-98.
