Winds to Blast Northern Europe Through Thursday

On the heels of several windstorms, another blast of wind will sweep across northern Europe during the middle of the week.
The source of the high winds during midweek will be an area of low pressure that is strengthening across the North Atlantic and will near Ireland and Scotland into Wednesday night. Wind will begin to increase across Ireland and the United Kingdom late in the day Wednesday and remain quite gusty through the night.

The greatest threat for damaging wind will be found across Ireland and the United Kingdom as the low tracks near or just north of Scotland. Wind gusts in many areas are expected to reach 80-100 kph (50-60 mph). Coastal Ireland, Wales and southwest England could potentially see gusts upwards of hurricane force.
In London, England, the strongest wind Wednesday night is expected to gust to near 80 kph (50 mph). Wind this strong can cause minor damage to homes and businesses, down trees and cause power outages.
Another concern is that travel will be severely impacted as the high winds will likely result in travel delays, especially for those using rail service. Strong cross winds will also cause dangerous travel by road, especially for lorries and other large vehicles.
To accompany the wind, a band of soaking rainfall will move across the region. Along with the wind and rain, the strong southwesterly wind flow ahead of the storm will create large swells that could result in coastal flooding across parts of Ireland, Wales and southern England.

As wind continues to blast south and east, Thursday will be a very windy day from northern France to Denmark. Peak gusts of 80-100 kph (50-60 mph) are expected, especially along coastal areas.
While widespread damaging wind gusts will become more isolated farther inland, locations such as Paris, Hamburg and Berlin could experience wind gusts to around 80 kph (50 mph) during the height of the storm.
The storm system bringing these strong winds will weaken and move into Scandinavia through the end of the week. While wind will not be as strong later in the week, the storm system will have far-reaching effects as a gusty wind will remain across much of northern and central Europe in the wake of the storm.
