An arctic high pressure system will shift over the eastern third of the country on Thursday, while snow showers will persist over the Rockies.

A high pressure system will sink southeastward over the Tennessee Valley and the Southeast. Temperatures will drop 20 to 30 degrees below normal over the Mississippi Valley, the Ohio Valley, the Tennessee Valley and the Southeast. As cold air slides across the Great Lakes, lake effect snow showers will develop over portions of the Northeast, focusing over northwest Pennsylvania, southwest New York and Upstate New York. Meanwhile, an area of low pressure will shift eastward over the northern Plains, the upper Midwest and the western Great Lakes. During the first half of the day, this system will usher light to moderate snow over North Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. By the afternoon and evening, snow showers will spread across Wisconsin, northern Illinois, northern Indiana, Michigan and northern Ohio.

Just to the south, early morning showers will be possible over southern Texas due to an shore flow from the Gulf of Mexico.

Cold air sinking southward from Canada will interact with the sloped terrain of the Intermountain West. Snow showers will persist over the central and northern high Plains, as well as the central and northern Rockies. A ridge of high pressure over the eastern Pacific will keep conditions dry to the west of the Continental Divide.
