Blustery Winds Start New Year for Northern Europe

A storm system is kicking off the new year across northern Europe on a rainy and blustery note.
The heart of the storm will graze far northern United Kingdom before tracking into Scandinavia. However, the front extending southward will pass through the northern tier of Europe.
The rain accompanying the front will be typical of the storms normally seen across the United Kingdom and Scandinavia.
Rainfall totals for the most part are not expected to exceed 25 mm (0.75 inches). The only exception is the western coasts of Norway and Scotland, where rain totals could tally to as much as 50 mm (2 inches) in some places.
However, the wind filtering into the region will be noticeably gustier than a usual day.

Wind gusts can reach 90 kph (55 mph) along the west-facing coasts of the United Kingdom and northern Europe through Friday. This includes the city of Bergen, Norway.
Such winds could cause some tree damage and sporadic power outages.
Other city hubs farther inland, like Edinburgh, Oslo and Hamburg, will still be on the windy side. However, the majority of wind gusts will remain below 75 kph (45 mph).

The combination of the blustery winds and the cooler air in the front's wake will create widespread subfreezing AccuWeather.com RealFeel® temperatures across northern Europe on Friday.
Actual temperatures will rise to around 6 C (mid-40s F) in Berlin, Germany, RealFeels will be held below freezing due to the wind.
Winds are expected to subside across the United Kingdom Saturday morning. Along the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, winds could continue to howl through the early part of the day on Saturday. However, damaging gusts are not expected to be a problem by late afternoon on Saturday as winds diminish.
As the front sinks southward, AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Tyler Roys is concerned for a period of ice to glaze parts of southeastern Europe Friday night.

Slippery roads and sidewalks could result from northern Serbia to southern Romania to eastern Ukraine.
