What was once Typhoon Matmo will continue to travel northeastward over the coming weekend, bringing continued heavy rain and occasional gusty winds to portions of Asia.
After ravaging China and Taiwan earlier this week, Matmo has weakened some, but it will remain a dangerous storm as it heads toward the Korean Peninsula Friday and northern Japan this weekend.
The center of the Matmo will pass over North Korea on Saturday, local time, with moderate to heavy rainfall totaling 2-4 inches (50-100 mm).
South Korea, including Seoul, will be spared from the worst of the storm but can still pick up over 2 inches (50 mm) of rain over a six- to 12-hour period as Matmo crosses through.
As Matmo gets picked up by a dip in the jet stream, it will accelerate to the northeast and impact portions of Japan on Sunday, namely the island of Hokkaido.

Hokkaido can pick up average rainfall totals of 1-2 inches (25-50 mm) from Matmo, with locally higher amounts.
Heavy rainfall amounts over such a short time span can result in flooding and mudslides. While winds will not be considerably gusty, the combination of a brief wind gust and a very wet ground can easily uproot trees and power lines.
