Record Cold Possible in Northeast; Another Cold Blast to Follow

After being teased with milder temperatures earlier this week, temperatures will drop to near-record levels Friday morning in the Northeast behind Winter Storm Vulcan.

Thursday morning, the shivering air mass set a few daily record lows in the Great Lakes, including Toledo, Ohio (-2 degrees), Fort Wayne, Ind. (-1 degrees) and Detroit. (3 degrees).
As high pressure moves over the Northeast by Friday morning and winds slacken, temperatures will plummet across the region. Lows will range from the single digits below zero in northern New England to the 20s in the Middle Atlantic.
Below are a few of the dozen or more locations that will be within three degrees of a daily record low early Friday morning, along with the records to beat. Click the city name to see the latest forecast for comparison.
Beyond Friday morning, temperatures will moderate. In fact, Saturday's highs could possibly reach into the 60s in Washington and Philadelphia. New York City will top out in the middle 50s, though a rain shower cannot be rule out as a cold front swings through the region.

The aforementioned cold front will keep the up and down reputation of temperatures in March on full display as we start next week.

After pushing south of the Canadian border on Saturday, a new blast of cold air will engulf the upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes by Sunday. Highs in the 20s and a few teens will be common across those regions, which is about 10 to 20 degrees below mid-March averages.

By St. Patrick's Day (Monday), temperatures will be 10 to 20 degrees below average in just about every location from the Great Lakes to the Northeast, and even the Southeast. Here are some specifics:
  • Monday morning lows: Single digits and teens in the Great Lakes and interior Northeast. Near the Canadian border, some subzero low temperatures are possible. Lows in the 20s along the I-95 corridor from Boston to Washington.
  • Monday afternoon highs: 20s around the Great Lakes, including Chicago, Detroit and Buffalo. Highs will be near the freezing mark (32 degrees) or lower from Boston to New York City. 30s and 40s across the Middle Atlantic to as far south as North Carolina.
  • Tuesday morning lows: Lows in the teens possible in Boston and New York. Farther south along I-95, low 20s are expected in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington. Single digits above and below zero in northern New England. 20s, 30s and 40s across the Southeast.
